I have seen quite a few articles lately discussing how real estate isn't the investment it once was and how your money doesn't grow as fast. I wonder how many people actually buy a home and consider it only as an investment?
When I meet with a buyer for the first time, one of the main things we discuss is what they are looking for in their new home. How many bedrooms? Baths? Locations? Price? I don't ask how much appreciation they want to see in the home. I can't predict the market so I can't say how that will play out!
Yes, there are investors who are only buying property (not homes) so they are focused only on what they will gain from the purchase. The key word in that phrase is property.
A "home" is something totally different. A home is where you plant your vegetable garden, you raise your family, or where you will celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. It's more than a roof over your head. It's your home. It's not an just an investment. Sure, no one buys a home hoping it doesn't appreciate in value but that isn't the main reason for buying. You buy a home because it fits your needs and lifestyle.
Don't get caught up in the negative comments about home ownership. If you are in the market for a new home, remember the market will go up and down the same way other markets do. A car you buy today may not be worth much in the future when you trade it in if gas prices are high. That same car may be worth a lot more if gas prices drop. You can't predict the future and neither can I! Buy a home that suits your needs today.
